Simpson Strong-Tie NZ Structural Engineer Daniel Scheibmair Elected to the Board of BOINZ
May 19, 2020
Simpson Strong-Tie’s Specification Engineer, Daniel Scheibmair, sits on the board of the Building Officials Institute of NZ (BOINZ). Daniel was one of 10 candidates nominated by peers to stand for the 2020 BOINZ board election, of which 6 were elected by vote of the Institute’s membership. Simpson Strong-Tie is pleased to be able to support Daniel and the work BOINZ undertakes, particularly so given the alignment between the non-profit registered charitable organization’s vision - “Improving the Quality and Performance of the Built Environment” - and Simpson Strong-Tie’s own aspiration of "safer, stronger structures".
For over 60 years, Simpson Strong-Tie has focused on creating engineered structural products that help people build safer and stronger homes and buildings; an aspirational tenet that cannot be achieved in isolation. Simpson Strong-Tie globally has a proud history of offering its expertise to standards and code development committees to continually ‘raise the bar’ and create safer stronger structures for users and occupants. As Simpson Strong-Tie’s market share has grown in NZ, it has allowed the business to focus on wider industry engagement beyond their direct customers and product specifiers here also – the most recent being supporting Daniel and therefore BOINZ.
BOINZ is a membership organization with approximately 1200 members engaged in Building Control - which includes Building Consent Processing and Building Inspections. The Institute works closely with central and local government, drives industry professionalism through the requirement and adherence to building regulations and codes by all building and construction stakeholders, and through its members assists in times of post disaster building evaluation. Through their roles and responsibilities BOINZ’s membership could be considered the guardians of building quality, with the Institute supporting the guardians with education and continual professional development, advocacy, and advancing member professionalism.
Daniel notes that given his background as an engineer “the divide between the Building Control sector and design professionals & builders remains painfully visible. While the Institute naturally first and foremost exists for its members, having representation from someone with a design and manufacturing background should complement the Building Controls background the Institute’s board has traditionally consisted of and relied upon to guide the Institute’s strategic direction.” He looks forward to working with the other elected board members, and guiding the Institute and its staff to provide BOINZ members with the tools and support they need to be recognized as the guardians of building quality – and that ultimately will improve the quality and performance of the built environment and create safer stronger structures for all New Zealanders.
