A new wharf is being constructed at Hobsonville Point to enhance the area’s marine infrastructure. This project is central to Auckland Council’s Upper Waitematā Marine Centre initiative, which aims to bolster community engagement and marine activities.

Led by Auckland-based civil engineering firm Oxcon, the initial phase included developing a 1200m² platform adjacent to Boundary Road featuring a timber jetty and direct water access. To maintain the integrity of the marine structures, highly durable structural connectors and fasteners, especially those capable of withstanding severe corrosive environments, were needed.

Site Manager Jeremy Rees (Oxcon) engaged Simpson Strong-Tie for corrosion-resistant solutions. Area Manager Darren Chen and Technical Support Specialist Darrin Eichmann recommended the Deck-Drive™ Premium Fasteners and other 316 stainless steel connectors and fasteners, highlighting their extensive testing for load capacity, corrosion resistance, and installation efficiency.

Product Details:

  • SDWS27 316SS Heavy-duty Structural Fastener: Suitable for marine structures like docks and wharfs, offering strength and corrosion resistance.
  • E5 316SS Reinforced Angle Bracket: Designed for structural framing at 90° angles, ideal for deck joist connections in marine environments.
  • H3 316SS Hurricane Tie: Provides a robust link between joists and bearers, resisting wind and seismic forces with 316 stainless steel.
  • DSD 316SS Hardwood Decking Screw: Ideal for securing 42mm Kwila boards to joists, featuring a broad head for better clamping and a decorative finish.

We're thrilled to see the completion of the new wharf at Hobsonville Point. Jeremy and the Oxcon team are very proud of this project and the solutions and support Simpson Strong-Tie provided. This achievement marks a significant step in transforming the waterfront into a vibrant community hub.
